Adventurous activities undertaken without the appropriate training or experience can be high-risk and dangerous, possibly resulting in injury, illness or death. It is essential for organizers to apply the principles of good management to ensure risks are managed.
BS 8848 pulls together expertise and good practice into a new national standard for the safe management of overseas ventures. BS 8848 provides a specification for organizing and managing visits, fieldwork, expeditions, and adventurous activities, outside the United Kingdom.
BS 8848 covers the preparation and execution of adventurous activities abroad so that the level of risk included is reasonable and acceptable. It will prepare participants for the risks involved, and the actions and behaviour required to keep risks down to acceptable levels.

Specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions and adventurous activities outside the United Kingdom
We have had discussions with the Directors, Management and Staff of Coral Cay Conservation Limited and have identified, examined and evidenced the policies and procedures of the Company in respect of its operations outside the United Kingdom.
In addition, we have tested the application of these policies and procedures with reference to a sample venture, and its venture leadership, and have determined that this venture will operate in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Company.
On the basis of the evidence and information provided, together with the answers given to our questioning and tests on the application thereof, in our opinion we consider that the overseas operating procedures and controls of Coral Cay Conservation Limited conform to British Standard 8848:2007+A1:2009.
The appropriate form of disclosure, in accordance with the standard, is as follows:-
Ventures provided by Coral Cay Conservation Limited conform to BS 8848, Specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions, and adventurous activities outside the United Kingdom. Independently assessed and declared by The Young Explorers’ Trust, on the basis of the operating procedures and safety management systems evidenced on 20th January 2011 and a sample venture examined, and valid to 20th January 2014.
This opinion and declaration are provided to Coral Cay Conservation Limited on the basis of information and evidence made available. The Trustees and Officers of the Young Explorers’ Trust cannot be held responsible for such declaration and parties wishing to rely upon such declaration must satisfy themselves of its appropriateness.
This endorsement is for a term of three years from the date below and is subject to an annual review.
